Personal Bio

Dr. Mary Ian McAteer is a primary care pediatrician in the Indianapolis area with over 30 years of experience caring for children and supporting families. She provides a whole child, family-centered approach to mental health concerns, combining medical expertise with careful attention to development, behavior, and daily functioning.

Dr. McAteer creates a welcoming, unrushed space where children feel safe and understood, and where families have time to share what matters most. She offers mental health services, including diagnostic planning, medical evaluation, medication management, follow-up visits, pharmacogenetic testing when appropriate, and referrals to therapies tailored to a child’s strengths. She can also help evaluate concerns related to grief, trauma, changes in family dynamics, learning challenges, and mental health symptoms that may arise alongside medical conditions.

Dr. McAteer earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Purdue University and her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, and completed her internship and residency at Riley Hospital for Children. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a delegate for the Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA), a past president of the Indianapolis Medical Society, and an ISMA trustee. She is active in the community and enjoys reading, tennis, cooking (especially feeding family and friends with fresh sourdough bread), gardening, traveling, and spending time with her family.
