Biofeedback is a mind-body treatment that helps individuals better understand and regulate the body’s physical responses to stress, anxiety, pain, and other concerns. Using specialized equipment, biofeedback provides real-time information about processes such as heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, skin temperature, or sweating.
By learning to recognize these physical patterns, individuals can practice techniques that help calm the nervous system and improve their ability to respond to stress in a healthier, more intentional way.
How Does Biofeedback Work?
During a biofeedback session, small, noninvasive sensors may be placed on the body to monitor specific physiological responses. The information is displayed on a screen, allowing you and your provider to observe how your body reacts to different thoughts, emotions, movements, or relaxation exercises.
Your provider may guide you through strategies such as:
- Controlled breathing
- Progressive muscle relaxation
- Mindfulness
- Guided imagery
- Stress-management techniques
- Changes in posture or movement
Over time, practicing these skills may help you recognize early signs of physical tension and develop greater control over your body’s stress response.
What Can Biofeedback Help Address?
Biofeedback may be incorporated into treatment for concerns such as:
- Anxiety and chronic stress
- Panic symptoms
- Headaches and migraines
- Chronic pain
- Muscle tension
- Sleep difficulties
- Trauma-related symptoms
- Attention and concentration difficulties
- Stress associated with medical conditions
Biofeedback is often used alongside psychotherapy, medication management, or other treatment approaches as part of an individualized care plan.
What to Expect
Your first appointment will typically include a discussion of your symptoms, goals, medical history, and current stressors. Your provider will explain the biofeedback process and determine which physiological responses may be most helpful to monitor.
Biofeedback is noninvasive and does not send electrical currents into the body. The equipment simply measures and displays information about your body’s natural responses.
Building Skills Beyond the Session
An important goal of biofeedback is helping you develop skills that can be used outside the office. With practice, you may become more aware of how your body responds to stress and more confident using relaxation and self-regulation strategies in everyday life.
At Indiana Health Group, biofeedback may be included as part of a personalized treatment plan designed to support your emotional and physical well-being.
